Deputy President David Mabuza will meet with various stakeholders of organised agriculture today in Aggeneys as part of the land reform and integrated farmer support program.
The visit follows the commitment made by Deputy President Mabuza in the National Assembly that the government, working with various stakeholders in the agricultural sector, urgently needs to find solutions to meet the ongoing drought challenges in the Northern Cape, Free State and North West Provinces.
The Northern Cape, in particular, is experiencing the worst drought in all five districts. Almost 15,500 farms with a capacity of over 600 000 livestock units, covering more than 20 million hectares, are severely affected.
Therefore, it is estimated that the situation may escalate to 1 million livestock units which could be harmed if normal rainfall is not reached during the summer rainy season.
