The Drinks Federation of South Africa has cautioned the public to avoid consuming fake and counterfeit alcohol during the Easter weekend.

It says growing financial pressure on households may be a driver of the illicit alcohol trade.

According to the federation, illicit alcohol may contain harmful substances, such as methanol and industrial chemicals.

It explains that these substances pose serious health risks.

The federation advises consumers to only buy alcohol from reputable liquor outlets and check products carefully to ensure they are safe.
