A notice circulating in the Matjieskloof community has called for a solidarity gathering following the tragic deaths of Jade Makaties and Mia Berry.

The two young people, a woman and a young man, reportedly died in the early hours of Sunday, March 29, after being struck by a pickup truck while walking along the access road from Springbok to Matjieskloof.

The incident is said to have occurred at the first sharp left turn, just above the partially obscured turn-off to Uitkyk In tow service, an area residents describe as dangerous.

Local reports indicate the driver of the bakkie sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Community member, Dona-Lee Jano, says residents plan to gather at 1:30pm at the Makaties family home before proceeding to the police station, as calls intensify for clarity and accountability surrounding the fatal crash.
