The South African Police Service in the Northern Cape is urging communities to remain vigilant as excessive alcohol consumption remains a key driver of contact crimes, including gender-based violence, sexual assaults, rape, murder, and assaults. 

Provincial police spokesperson Warrant Officer Molefi Shemane says police analysis indicates that these crimes spike over weekends, highlighting the importance of personal safety measures such as travelling with friends, staying in well-lit areas, using a buddy system in public venues, and never accepting drinks or lifts from strangers. 

Shemane urged residents to stay alert, trust their instincts, avoid secluded areas, and plan ahead by carrying transport money, personal alarms, and emergency contacts on speed dial.

Victims of crime are further pleaded to seek immediate assistance, preserve evidence by not changing clothes or showering after an assault, and report all details to police through their nearest station.
