The Premier of the Northern Cape, Dr. Zamani Saul, has confirmed the first case of Foot and Mouth Disease in the province.

According to the media statement issued yesterday, the outbreak was detected on a farm in Kuruman in the JT Gaetsewe District after Veterinary Services were alerted to a suspected case on Saturday, February 7.

The provincial government says the samples were sent to the Onderstepoort Laboratory and positive results were confirmed on the 10th of February.

Foot and Mouth Disease is a highly contagious virus affecting cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and pigs, with serious economic consequences for the livestock sector.

Naledi Gaosekwe, premier's office communication officer says the Provincial Government has activated containment measures and is urging farmers to report symptoms immediately and comply with all veterinary regulations.
