Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has announced that South Africa’s ferrochrome firms will receive life-saving support.

The support will be in the form of an ultra-low tariff of 62 cents per kilowatt-hour.

According to reports, this is far less than what South African households pay.

The new tariff is expected to see over 30 smelters restart, supporting 11-thousand-400 direct jobs and around 100-thousand indirect jobs.

Ramokgopa says South Africa should have 45 furnaces up and running by the end of the year because of this intervention.
