The Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services has raised concerns about the deteriorating state of correctional centres following oversight visits on Tuesday, August 11. 

During a visit to Brandvlei Correctional Centre, the committee received a briefing from the Department on plans to restore and upgrade telephone communication systems at correctional facilities.

The department says the upgrades are aimed at ensuring inmates can maintain contact with their families. 

EFF MP Carl Niehaus says urgent action is needed to address the worsening conditions faced by correctional centres.

The committee says the oversight process identified challenges requiring intervention and ensure the Department follows through on its plans.
