The ANC in Namakwa has welcomed the appointment of its Regional Chairperson, Mervin Cloete, as Deputy Chairperson of Committees in the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature on Tuesday, 08 September 2026.

Cloete was officially sworn in as a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature on 25 February 2025, marking a significant milestone in his political career.

He previously served as the Executive Mayor of the Namakwa District Municipality, a position he vacated with immediate effect following his appointment to the provincial legislature.

The ANC says Cloete’s appointment is a reflection of his leadership capacity and his commitment to serving the people of the Northern Cape.

His move to the provincial legislature is expected to allow him to contribute more broadly to policy development, oversight and the functioning of government in the province.

Bertie Saal, regional spokesperson says Cloete as the Deputy Chairperson of Committees will play a prominent role in overseeing the work conducted by various committees within the Provincial Legislature.

Saal says accountability, monitoring and evaluation will be central to his new responsibilities in strengthening the oversight role of the Legislature over the Executive.
