Burkina Faso’s military government has officially dissolved all political parties in the country, a decision announced on Thursday by the presidency in Ouagadougou. 

According to AfrNews, the decree, approved by the council of ministers, formally ends the existence of more than 100 registered parties whose activities had already been suspended since the 2022 military takeover. 

Interior Minister Emile Zerbo said the move aims to address divisions and weaknesses in the political system and to “refound the state” under a new governance model. 

All assets belonging to the dissolved parties will be transferred to the state, and draft laws to replace the legal framework for political organisations will be sent to the Transitional Legislative Assembly. 

he decision marks a significant step in the military government’s consolidation of power three years after Captain Ibrahim Traoré seized control of the West African nation.
