The Kamiesberg Local Municipality has issued an urgent alert to farmers following the confirmed outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in the Northern Cape.

Department of Agriculture warn that the virus spreads rapidly through direct contact between animals, as well as through contaminated vehicles, equipment, clothing and footwear. 

Farmers are urged to immediately restrict livestock movement, avoid buying or selling animals, especially from unknown sources, and to disinfect all vehicles, equipment and footwear before and after entering farms. 

Livestock owners must also isolate any sick animals without delay and strictly control farm access by limiting visitors.

Suspected cases must be reported immediately to State Veterinary Services in Namakwa at 087 6300 329 or 087 6300 346 to protect herds and safeguard the province’s agricultural economy.
