The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is calling on government to reinstate temporary fuel levy relief following sharp increases in petrol and diesel prices.

Petrol prices increased by R1.29 per litre, while diesel rose by about R2.94 to R3.15 per litre from 2 September.

The union federation says the increases are placing further pressure on households, particularly low-income workers who spend a significant portion of their income on transport.

COSATU says previous fuel levy relief helped protect workers and the economy from rising transport and living costs.

The federation is urging government to act as further fuel price increases could put additional pressure on consumers and businesses.
