A 31-year-old man, Andrew Brink, has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in the Garies Regional Court.

The police says the incident happened on 1 February 2025 in Klipfontein, where Brink threw a glass during a social gathering, and fragments struck a four-year-old boy, causing severe facial injuries.

The case was reported by a hospital social worker, leading to Brink’s arrest in March 2025.

Cpt. Ivan Magerman, regional police spokesperson says Brink has been declared unfit to work with children and to possess a firearm.

The Namakwa District Management has welcomed the sentence, which was handed down on 14 April 2026. (Clip)
