The Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape has raised concern over poor financial management in municipalities, following preliminary audit outcomes by the Auditor-General.

According to a recent briefing, 29 municipalities spent over R180 million on consultants for financial reporting during the 2024/25 financial year, marking a 20 percent increase.

The DA says this comes at a time when municipalities are struggling to pay bills and deliver basic services, highlighting ongoing fiscal indiscipline.

DA Fawzia Rhoda says the report found that 90 percent of financial statements contained material misstatements, including work completed by consultants that lacked proper review and supporting documentation.

The DA has called for intensified oversight by the Provincial Legislature, warning that residents continue to suffer due to poor financial decisions by municipal administrations. (Clip)
