Vedanta Zinc International has provided an update on its mining operations and future direction in the Namakwa region.

CEO Vijay Kumar says the company’s Gamsberg, Swartberg, and Deeps mines are all at different stages of their mining lifecycle.

Kumar confirmed during a radio interview yesterday that the Deeps mine has closed after becoming economically unsustainable due to rising costs and declining ore grades.

The company says the Section 189 labour consultation process was implemented only after several alternatives and mitigation measures were explored to minimise job losses.

Vedanta Zinc International has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable growth, investment, and continued engagement with communities in the Namakwa region.
