New History Curriculum Sparks National Debate
Loading
/

We explore a potentially significant shift in South Africa’s school history curriculum following the Department of Basic Education’s draft revision of the CAPS History syllabus. The proposed changes aim to place greater emphasis on African history, local lived experiences, and the development of critical thinking skills in learners.

To help unpack these questions, we are joined by David Elliot, Adjunct Academic at UNISA, whose research provides valuable insight into history education and curriculum development.

While supporters see this as an important step toward a more inclusive and contextually relevant curriculum, the changes also raise important questions. How will this reshape what learners are taught about the past?
