The bail application of Shuphren Ouers (19) has been postponed to Monday, 29 January 2024. He made brief appeareance in Calvinia Magistrate Court on Friday.
Ouers is accused of brutally murdering Hesty-Ann Green on the New Year Eve and left her lifeless body at abandon building in Brandvlei.
Ouers was arrested few days later in Cape Town after he fled the town.
The heinous crime emotionally disturbed the residents of Brandvlei and the surrounding communities in Namakwa District Municipalities (NDM).
On the day of brief appreance, community members in Calvinia came in numbers to oppose bail appeal. The Democratic Alliance was seen at the protesting scene outside the court.
The National Prosecution Authority (NPA) added another charge of attempted rape which is a Schedule 6 Offence.
During court proceedings, Ouers’ argued that his client was not a fugitive, he has no previous convictions, and has no criminal record. Nor will he intimidate witnesses during the case or obstruct investigations against him.
Sgt. Molefi Shemane, police spokesperson in the Northern Cape said they will continue to object the bail request as the accused will contiue to remain in custody.
Nikolas Swarts, Green’s uncle said the incident has scarred them for life and the 31st December can never be celebrated with joy. And hopes to see Green attend matric dance and completing her grade 12 has been crushed.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape says they will request the Hantam municipality to urgently demolish the broken Brandvlei building.
The party says they will put extensive pressure on the municipality and law enforcement to create safer spaces, and next week, they will submit a formal request for the creche’s demolition.
Melvin Cloete, NDM Executive Mayor is expected to visit the family of Hesty-Ann Green on Monday. And lead the Gender-Based Violence march, the walking procession will start at the Brandvlei old creche and end at the Brandvvei – police station.
On Wednesday, Cloete will visit the school where she would have completed grade 12 this year.
