The African National Congress (ANC) won the by-election for the Karoo-Hoogland Municipality, securing 801 votes, on Wednesday, December 04.
Anro Deswell Persciville Willemse, the ANC’s councilor for Ward 1, garnered 63% support from the region.
According to the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), John Jefrey Booisen, representing the Patriotic Alliance (PA), received 19% of the votes, totaling 246. Meanwhile, Whilet Willemse, from the Democratic Alliance (DA), placed third with 230 votes.
The ANC’s decisive win granted them outright control of the municipal area, defeating the PA by 555 votes and the DA by 571 votes in a landslide victory in Williston.
The new composition of the council now stands at ANC 6 (5), DA 2 (3), PA 2, and FF+ 1, for a total of 11 seats.
