On Tuesday, 23 April, Radio NFM hosted the first Political Debate in the Nama Khoi Region where local political party leaders pulled out all the stops to be victorious in this cut-throat spectacle.

In response to the promises and commitments put forward by candidates from various political parties in the Namakwa region, remarks were made that: “Empty vessels make the loudest promise noise”.

The Namakwa Political Debate, held at the Okiep REC Club Community Hall on April 23 and hosted by Radio NFM, attracted a significant audience from the Nama-Khoi municipality. Community members expressed concerns regarding the lack of substantial information in the presentations.

Education: The political parties presented similar perspectives on the state of the education system in Namakwa. Dr. Gustav Bock of the Namakwa Civic Movement (NCM) proposed transforming local schools into technical institutions to bolster youth skills. Denise Owies of ActionSA criticized the Department of Education’s efforts in Namakwa and pledged to advocate for better quality education. Other parties also pledged to address curriculum issues and support Early Child Development (ECD) schools.
Service Delivery: Rodney Kritzinger of the Democratic Alliance (DA) questioned the feasibility of eliminating household bill debts, acknowledging economic struggles under Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration.
Housing: Different parties offered various perspectives on housing issues, ranging from promoting self-maintenance among residents to addressing administrative backlogs in housing delivery.
Health: Concerns were raised about emergency services, healthcare staffing, and infrastructure. Joshua Losper of the ANC pledged to work with the Department of Health to improve services.
Crime: High crime levels in the community prompted parties to encourage collaboration with local law enforcement.
Immigration: Issues related to illegal immigration and law enforcement’s effectiveness were discussed, with promises made to address these challenges.

Overall, community members expressed mixed feelings about the government’s responsiveness to their concerns. Some residents, like Brian Moody, felt disillusioned by unfulfilled promises.
