The vacation experience at the ǀAi-ǀAis/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park in the Namakwa District, Northern Cape, surpassed global tourists’ expectations. During the 2024 festive season, visitor numbers doubled compared to 2023.

Genevieve Maasdorp, regional communication manager, said the tourism experience at the park was highly satisfactory for visitors.

“Between December 1st and 31st, the park welcomed a total of 481 visitors, doubling the number of tourists from last year,” said Maasdorp.

According to Maasdorp, the opening of the Pontoon was the main attraction for tourists. “The convenience of the border post in the park allowed tourists to enjoy two countries at once. Additionally, the nursery enriched visitors’ experiences,” she said.

With its stunning desert and mountain landscapes, tourists had the opportunity to explore and witness the traditional Nama culture, all while escaping the hustle and bustle of the city life.

Maasdorp added; “The river camps were quite popular, with people enjoying the Orange River for fishing and kayaking. Most visitors were 4×4 enthusiasts who embraced the challenge of the park’s 4×4-routes. Furthermore, the Botanical Garden and Nursery attracted a different kind of visitor, eager to experience the various plant ecosystems of the park and region.”

During this exciting and relaxing period, the park experienced a significant financial boost compared to previous years.

“In terms of accommodation, the park saw a growth of 300% compared to the previous year, camping increased by 200%, conservation fees rose by 500%, and retail sales grew by 152%,” Maasdorp said.

Meanwhile, the Namakwaland region remains vulnerable to illegal poaching due to its rich array of protected plant species and wildlife, which adds to its distinct appeal.

Maasdorp said that they remain vigilant against illegal activities and monitor the situation with assistance from relevant stakeholders.

“During the festive season, we received no reports of illegal activity,” she said.

Looking ahead to the next seasonal period, the park aims to enhance both domestic and international tourist experiences.
