The Department of Education in the Northern Cape hope to finalize pupil’s placement for the 2024 academic year before Christmas day.

According to the department spokesperson, Geoffrey Van De Merwe, they recently finalized more than 600 appeals that were submitted on the Online Admission System.

“We have a total of 377 unplaced learners, which the Department is currently finalizing”.

In June, the Department reported to have received a total of 51,158 online admission applications by the NCDoE by the close of the online system.

Earlier this month, parents in Bergsig raised concerns over the shortage of educators at SA Van Wyk High School. And they handed over a memorandum of demand for educators’ deployment.

Van De Merwe responded that in such cases, parents need to take consideration to apply for their children to the proximate schools. Adding that the school has experienced a sharp decline to pupils enrolment.

“We encourage community members to enroll their children at schools located in their communities… staff establishments are allocated to the schools, according to the learners number,” he said.

Enrolling children at different academic institutions may be believed to be in their best interest for quality education but that sets a negative reputation and undermines closed schools.
