The Namakwa District Community Police Board in Calvinia, conducted an initiative to give back to the community on the 3 December 2023.

The NDCPB conducting an awareness directing to people living with disability and highlighting an ongoing initiative against Gender-Based violence.

The Calvinia community received safety kits for the women who may come across being affected by GBV.

The board also gave out: torches, pepper spray, and safety goodies as part of the handout. 

In wake of surging criminal activities during festival season – Women, children and people living with disability are advised to take precautionary measures and know how to protect themselves when face with threats. 

The theme for the 16 Days of Activism Campaign for 2023 is: “Accelerating actions to end gender-based violence & femicide: leaving no one behind”.

The sub-theme for this year is: “Safe access for women to clean water: a basic human right”.

According to the Northern Cape provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliwa Otola said  about 85 to 90 percent of sexual assaults reported by women are perpetrated by someone known to the victim; about half occur on a date.

The most common locations are the man’s or woman’s home in the context of a party or a date.

The individuals perpetrating the crime may range from classmates to neighbors.

Otola said that with 92 police stations in the Province, there has been a reported increase in contact crime, with the exception of murder cases, which have seen a decline this quarter.

She was speaking last week at the release of the provincial 2nd Quarter 2023/24 Crime Statistics.

The Premier, Dr Zamani Saul indicated that abuse of alcohol and drugs is the root cause of this crime. 

Meanwhile, Nomandla Bloem, the Northern Cape MEC for Safety and Liaison plead to community members to take an active interest in their children’s lives.

Releasing second-quarter crime statistics for 2023/2024, Police Minister Bheki Cele reported that South Africa recorded 10,516 rapes, 1,514 cases of attempted murder, and 14,401 assaults against female victims in July, August, and September.
