The District Court in Springbok has postponed the case of a 59-year-old man accused of murder to Tuesday, October 2nd.
Molefi Shemane, the Northern Cape police spokesperson, said Neels Bezuidenhoudt allegedly fatally stabbed a 24-year-old woman on Sunday, August 4th, 2024, in Okiep.
According to sources, Bezuidenhoudt was reportedly in an intoxicated state when he went to his girlfriend’s house looking for her.
Upon arrival, he met the girlfriend’s sister, who informed him that the girlfriend was not present.
This upset Bezuidenhoudt and the altercation quickly escalated, resulting in the brutal stabbing of the sister, causing her death.
This incident happened just days before the commemoration of Women’s Day.
The Namaqualand were deeply affected as South Africans continue to advocate against the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) pandemic.
On August 14th, the accused abandoned his formal bail application, citing fears for his life if he were to be granted bail and return to the community. When the court was adjourning, Bezuidenhoudt pleaded for the opportunity to convey his apologies to the deceased’s family, but the plea was denied.
The case has been postponed until October 16th due to an outstanding witness statement and postmortem.
The police investigation continues.
