The Springbok Regional Court in the Namakwa District has convicted a former police officer from the Springbok Crime Prevention Unit, Kelvin James Brown, on two counts of rape and one count of obstructing the administration of justice on Friday, October 18.

Brown, aged 45, faced charges for the sexual assault of two minors, aged 14 and 17, in 2021.

The court issued the following sentences:

For Count 1, the rape of a 14-year-old: life imprisonment

For Count 2, the rape of a 17-year-old: 10 years

For the charge of obstructing justice: 5 years

According to Mojalefa Senokoatsane, spokesperson for the Northern Cape National Prosecution Authority (NPA), Brown has been added to the South African sex offenders registry and has been deemed unfit to work with minors or to possess a firearm.
